Village Board Considers Tot Lots for Removal

In the February newsletter, the Association announced efforts by the Columbia Association (CA) to reduce costs by eliminating of some of its tot lots. Over a period of 10 years, CA has plans to reduce the number of tot lots Columbia-wide from 171 to 136. Currently there are 25 tot lots in the Village of River Hill. By eliminating underutilized tot lots CA expects to reduce the daily/weekly maintenance costs and future replacement costs. CA estimates that it will cost $10,000 per tot lot to remove the equipment, restore, and landscape the sites.
Each Village has been asked to develop a priority list. Based on the feedback received from residents to date, two tot lots in our Village have been identified by the Board of Directors as the top candidates for removal:

  • RH9 – Mellow Wine (located behind Mellow Wine Way adjacent to MD 32); and
  • RH21 – Red Clover Lane (located between Red Clover Lane and Winter Grain Path).

RH9 is located in a wooded area and is not visible from any homes. RH21 is very small and primarily services the homes located on Winter Grain Path and Red Clover Lane.
The Association has not heard from any residents regarding these two tot lots. Whereas, the Association heard from numerous residents regarding the need to retain RH4 – River Run, RH15 – Morning Light Trail, RH20 – Ascending Moon Path, and RH24 – Distant Thunder Trail.
The Village Board wants to hear from residents who utilize RH9 and RH21 as well as those who support their removal. Residents should voice their opinions no later than June 4 in order that their views may be considered at the June 7 Board Meeting. Provide your input by attending an upcoming Board Meeting, emailing comments to Frank Saletel, Open Space Liaison, at fle008@verizon.net, or calling the Village Manager at 410-531-1749.
