Back to School: Safety Reminders for a Busy Season
The 2026–2027 school year for the Howard County Public School System got under way on Aug. 24, and that means more students on the move throughout the Village of River Hill. Many of our neighborhood’s children walk to school, and families are adjusting to new routines. Please be especially alert during morning and afternoon bus times to help keep students safe, and be patient with new drivers who are still gaining confidence behind the wheel.
As the school year begins, here are a few additional reminders for residents:
• Slow down in school zones and neighborhood streets. Extra foot traffic means extra caution.
• Watch for students at crosswalks and intersections. Some may be walking to school for the first time.
• Avoid distracted driving. Phones, navigation screens and conversations can pull attention away from the road.
• Be mindful of bus stops. Children may gather early or linger after drop-off.
• Stop for school buses. Maryland law requires drivers to stop when bus lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended.
• Expect unpredictable behavior. Younger students may dart across streets or forget to look both ways.
With a little extra awareness and courtesy, we can help ensure a safe and smooth start to the school year for all River Hill families.
